INTERESTING HISTORICSL FACTS ABOUT BERCHTESGADEN

In fact, Adolf Hitler had a residence on Obersalzberg, which between 1933 and 1945 was the second most important center of power of the National Socialist tyranny after Berlin. Today the Obersalzberg is both an important tourist destination and an important place of learning and remembrance of the National Socialist era. Over the course of the 20th century, this place changed significantly – first through and for Hitler, then later as he came to terms with his history and the terrible events of that time.

The exhibition “Idyll and Crime” presents around 350 objects, documents, photos and multimedia elements that illuminate the historical site and tell the fates of the victims of National Socialism. The most outstanding exhibit is the accessible historical bunker complex, which can be explored as part of the permanent exhibition. Since 1999, the Obersalzberg documentation has been dedicated to coming to terms with the Nazi past and is one of the most important institutions on a national and international level.

As early as 1923, Obersalzberg was Adolf Hitler’s vacation spot above Berchtesgaden. After the takeover of power in 1933, Obersalzberg became a protected restricted area for the Führer and systematically developed into the second seat of government of the Third Reich alongside Berlin. The Obersalzberg documentary highlights the eventful history of Obersalzberg and its close connection to National Socialism.
